The Future of Cellular Health? Plant-Derived Exosomes
today we are talking about the future of cellular health, plant-derived exosomes
Welcome to Wellness in Every Season. We talk all things wellness regarding the environment that you spend a lot of your time in, your physical health, your intellectual health, your financial health, your spiritual health, professional health, your social health, who you have relationships with, your emotional health.
This is a really big umbrella, so expect all kinds of topics within all of these amazing dimensions of your wellness. Let's dive in
I have with me Dr. Jeff Gross. Let me tell you a little bit about Dr. Jeff. So he is a neurosurgeon who transitioned towards regenerative medicine and longevity. His company promotes plant-derived exosomes as a way to deliver beneficial compounds to the body, and his company name is, I just lost it, is Re celebrate. So let's dive into these questions.
And before that, let me just say thank you for joining us, Dr. Jeff, and for being here while you're out of state.
It's my pleasure. It's great to talk to you.
All right.
Let's get to the first question because I'm really excited to learn more about this. Most people have never heard of plant-derived exosomes.
I'm one of those. What are they, and how are they different from simply eating the plants they come from?
Well, plant-derived exosomes require a little bit of going back and learning what an exosome is and why it's interesting and how I got to figure out plant exosomes as a product. So, I'm a regenerative medicine doc.
As you said earlier, I was practicing neurological surgery. I wanted to add stem cells to my practice because I saw all the people going out of the country to get results and things. And about eight years ago, I added them. I went and retrained and all this, and I learned all about regenerative medicine, stem cell biologics, and how we can use that to help people maybe repair something or help their body heal, or part of an overall health and holistic approach to wellness and longevity.
So it turns out that, -- and I do a lot of joint and spine work. I still do. We help people avoid surgery. But we also do wellness, and we also, turns out, we learned that stem cells actually don't do the work, even though they're the cool buzz phrase, They're the reason why you search it on the internet, but they're not doing the work.
They deliver the work. They deliver things that they secrete. And if you wanna be holistic about that, it's-- we, we have a word for what they secrete. It's not just the ju- stem cell juice. It's called the secretome or the stem cell secretome. It's what it secretes. And there are two components of that secretion.
There are growth factors, and these are proteins and peptides, and you may have heard of peptides. And there are vesicles, even smaller than cell bubbles that contain information, biologic information. Our cells then take in both forms of that. Some of those proteins might bind the cell surface in what's called a receptor and activate a pathway in the cell, and the vesicles bind with the cell and, inject of sorts their contents.
And then our cells get influenced. They go from aging, degenerated, inflamed, and then they reverse back into a more youthful, restorative state in a holistic way. So we use that strategically. Now, that's regenerative medicine. Those vesicles are called exosomes. So when we use the word exosomes, we're really talking about stem cell-derived or stem cell-secreted exosomes.
So we are doing this clinically. very active in this. I kind of became the exosome guy clinically in the US very quickly I've written on it, I speak on it, and I'm here out of state speaking on exosomes today. But it became clear through my daily research, 'cause I'm an absolute nerd, I read every day what's the new research out there, that there is a wealth of science as to other species, including plants, make their cells, their stem cells make these vesicles.
They make exosomes. Dig further, it turns out plants not only make exosomes, but that's how they deliver their phytonutrients. Let's look at that word for a minute, phytonutrients. Phyto means growth or plant. Nutrients, I think we know what that means. So the, the nutrients you get from plants are called phytonutrients, and that's the fancy words you might hear, out there that, citrus fruits make certain types, red grapes make resveratrol.
Plants make glutathione. They make, superoxide dismutase. They make, astaxanthins, some of the berries, all kinds of things. I know I mispronounced that, 'cause the words get fancier and fancier. But all those nutrients that you might go to the vitamin shop or buy online some supplement, plants already make them, and they package them in vesicles called exosomes.
That's called plant-derived exosomes. So I think I defined it, and I know there's more to unpack, but maybe I'll let you get a, a question in, since I took over your whole podcast already.
Yeah, that got very science and very, I was thinking about my undergrad during that. I knew some of those-
Sorry if that was traumatic.
No. No, I en- really enjoyed my undergrad. I went back after my kids... Well, my first kid was born. He was seven months old, so I went back when I was a bit older and wiser and more, knew what I wanted to do. So I really enjoyed- Smart.
Yeah ...
college again, so.
You weren't there just for the parties. Good.
No, I did it online while having more kids, and it was- Great
COVID too. So it wasn't that long ago, so, yeah.
Okay, so the next question: What happens after we consume these plant-derived exosomes? How are they thought to survive digestion? Because I know that not all vitamins survive that very well, the not non-naturally derived
ones. Correct. Very
correct. they enter the body, and how do they communicate or deliver compounds to our cells?
Great. So when you eat a piece of fruit, a healthy piece of fruit, you're gonna have a kiwi, you want all the health benefit, not just the good taste, but you want the health benefits from that beyond the fiber, and that comes through in some form through these plant-derived exosomes. The exosome made by a plant has a hardy membrane.
It's tougher than a mammal or our own human exosomes, which we use all the time strategically for various things. If you eat a human exosome, your stomach acid and the enzymes will probably open it up and disrupt the contents in your gut. They'll get digested. You really won't have much of a benefit. It turns out plant exosomes are hardier.
They survive digestion. They're designed to, or we were designed around it as we evolved, so that those exosomes actually are seen to survive the digestion. They are seen to pass the intestinal barrier and get into our bloodstream, but not only that, they survive the bloodstream and get into our cells at severely high delivery.
And let's compare that to a supplement off the shelf. Let's say you've-- you do your reading, you heard resveratrol is a great longevity phytonutrient. You wanna get some resveratrol. You can only eat so many red grapes, and although red wine has resveratrol, it also has alcohol, so you've gotta be careful and cautious with how much you take, right?
So you go to the vitamin store, and you pick up a bottle of resveratrol. Let's talk about how that's made. It's made in one of two ways. Either red grapes were crushed and processed biochemically into the molecule of resveratrol, which is put into a pill or a capsule You eat that, and, and the other way is, would be a synthetic version of a resveratrol.
You eat that, a lot of it gets digest in your stomach 'cause it's not encapsulated by an exosome. Very little gets into your system. If it does get into your bloodstream, it bounces around. There's no cell receptor that's gonna bring it into your cell. So you're, you have to overwhelm your system to get any to get into your cell, and we know it can be helpful if you have enough.
Well, nature's already figured this out. The plant-derived exosome with resveratrol comes from a number of fruits: citrus fruits, red grapes, others. And, we know that you get about 4,500 times the amount of resveratrol from an equal weight, milligrams, of an exosome packaged, naturally packaged version than you do the, the supplement on the shelf.
Now, some supplement companies have figured out, oh, we'll make it liposomal. We'll put an artificial membrane on it. And those liposomes do a little better, but still the exosome is the most efficient, natural deli- nature's figured this out. They deliver to the cell where you need it. The, the nutrient does nothing for you in your bloodstream.
Measuring it in your bloodstream tells you nothing about how much is in your cell where it's needed. So we know that, that fruits have this, but you'd have to eat an awful lot of fruit to really get a lot of additional benefit from having a lifetime of probably not getting enough, and that's why we're able finally to concentrate these natural fruit exosomes into a powder and put it in a capsule for daily supplementation.
It just makes me think about, before we got on we were talking about how he grew up where, close to where I live, and we kind of flipped. I grew up on the West Coast, he grew up on the East Coast. Now we live on- Right ... the opposite coasts. And I did a history tour in Annapolis a couple years ago with my husband, and realizing how hard life was back then and back when, what was it?
In the 17 and 1800s, back then. Can you tell history's not my strong suit? Anyway, they lived, if they were lucky, to my age, to their early 40s.
Yeah.
And now we're looking at living so much longer, and because we live longer, why not have the quality of life that we had in our 20s, 30s, and 40s?
And that just is amazing to me, and it makes me wish that the people back then had it. And it's that realization of, okay, we have this, so why aren't we using this as much as possible to our benefit?
you're 100% right. And, and phytonutrients, exosome, plant-derived exosome phytonutrients is just one piece of the longevity puzzle.
you, you gotta do the work. You gotta sleep right, you gotta eat properly, you gotta have mindfulness and relaxation, not be stressed all the time. You have to avoid certain things in your environment that we have a lot of, There are so many elements: exercise, bone mass, muscle mass, all these things have to be focused on, protein intake.
I mean, we could, we could make a hundred thing list we should all be doing every day. But a... a lot of people know they need supplements, right? 'Cause our diet is just bleached, bleached out, washed through, diluted. We need these things, and we have taken and created this supplement out of plant-derived exosomes from these organic Italian fruits in the blue zone.
Blue zones where people live to be 100 at a higher rate than anywhere else. And one of the reasons, not the only reason, it, is access to these fruits. They're mango, papaya, many citrus fruits, and they are extracted into a juice, and then the juice we are-- we have ultracentrifuges that can pull out the exosomes.
It's very labor-intensive. So, and you might say, "Why haven't we known this before? Why haven't we done this earlier?" It's been very difficult to do. So now we've got it figured out. We're working on some other things as well. But this is the first longevity supplement, and you can get rid of a handful of other supplements.
all the B vitamins except B12 you don't need, 'cause they get a higher concentration in the exosome, the plant exosome. You don't need vitamin C. You can always take extra, but it's a high, high delivery of vitamin C to your cell, which is incredible. we have superoxide dismutase, glutathione, resveratrol, other phytonutrients in this particular blend,
The sky's the limit. We're just developing them out from here. One small capsule a day, and y- you need many fewer pills in your daily routine.
And the, the caveat is make sure to check this against other vitamins. Make sure you're talking- Always ... to your doctor, your pharmacist. Do the work yourself. I've even had it, stuff that's been missed by my doctor and pharmacist.
Yep.
And it's important. And remember that you are in the driver's seat. If you're not, get in the driver's seat because this- Yep ... is your life, and it's an amazing life. It's what you create. And if you wanna be able to blow out your birthday candles and not have somebody else do it when you turn 100-
think about what things you wanna change in your life so that you can do that, and so that you can be walking up to the cake without any aids. Okay. I love that. So, yeah.
I love it. And l- let me add. Go ahead. I'm a doctor and, and, you... Patients are their own best advocates, and many doctors these days in this sick care system don't have the time to sit and hold your hand and go through all the explanation we were trained we should be going through with you, all the options, all those things.
And, doctors joke, "Oh, don't bring your Google questions in." No, I disagree. Bring them in. Go to ChatGPT, go to your favorite AI, go to Google, bring your list of question, questions in. They should all be answered to your satisfaction. Now, if you're taking up hours, then we have an issue, but, we should be able to answer most of those questions in a 15 to 20-minute timeframe.
And honestly, that's the point of this podcast is so that you have all this, you're getting other professionals, you're... And he was talking about wellness, we could talk about this forever, which is why it's called Wellness in Every Season for your life. And it's that reminder of using ChatGPT, using Google, using Gemini, whatever is out there that you wanna use, it can...
You can spend those hours so that you're refining it down to your 20 minutes, 30 minutes within the visit. So I love that. Let me ask one last question and then we'll after that ask where to find you and where to find these vitamins, or do you call them supplements? It's kind of interchangeable.
I, I call it longevity, Longevex, longevity exosomes, but you can call them whatever you want.
Okay. So where is the strongest research right now when it comes to potential applications like gut health, immune function, inflammation, and healthy aging, especially in related to what everything you've been talking about and your supplements?
If this podcast, dear listener, has stimulated your interest in this topic, please go to your internet browser and type in PubMed comma, and either plant-derived exosomes, and some people call those PDEs or, the other phrase is plant, ex-extracellular vesicle or PLEV.
And it will bring up only the literature in PubMed, published scientific literature, and you will have pages of references about the wellness, treating specific conditions and diseases, which we can't claim because it's nutraceutical. But there are... There is proof, there is medical evidence for the benefits of these.
It's why my wife and I take these every day. We put some in the dog's food. it's why I-- I'm not a supplement manufacturer by training. It-- I just, I couldn't not do this. So it's... I'm still practicing medicine. This, this, the exosome supplement is the first of its kind. It's the only, supplement that has actually shown to increase longevity of cells.
We did a study, increased all the markers of longevity and suppressed the damage markers, the, the senescent zombie cell markers. So if your cells live longer, their owner will live longer. There's no other supplement that can make that claim. We're the first exosome supplement, the first longevity supplement.
So we are-- we know we're disrupting, a lot and making a lot of companies cranky because now we have a four thousand five hundred more efficient cellular delivery than they'll ever have
So it sounds like the answer to this would be it helps gut health, immune function, inflammation, healthy aging, all of it.
Yep. There, there are, there are, papers on using it to treat certain cancers. again, I'm not making that claim from, for Longevx because we're a supplement, we're not allowed to make that claim. But there is medical evidence that should give you good reason to maybe wanna take this preventative or if you're in the middle of dealing with a diagnosis and you wanna do everything naturally and holistically that you can, without eating bushels of fruit every day.
It takes seven liters of juice to make one capsule of these fruits. Wow. So this is not insignificant. If you take right now a green powder daily, like an AG1 or something like that, you're getting the whole fruit. With our capsule, you're just getting the exosomes. You'd have to take a whole container of AG1 to get what's in one capsule for phytonutrients.
Now, we don't have fiber. You still need to eat a little fruit and get the fiber.
So this isn't completely replacing a crop diet?
No, it will not. It will help fill a void in phytonutrients, but you still have to do the work. I think we established that.
So still eat healthy. You got it. Still do your exercises.
Still do-
Yes ...
all the different parts of longevity. Awesome.
Use, use your muscles, please. Please, please. That's... If I could impart one thing, it's free to do, you'll live longer if you exercise every day.
Oh. And you get sunshine. Get some vitamin D along with it, and some fresh air.
Yep. That's right.
No, I'm gonna ask the other one. If plant-derived exosomes develop the way researchers hope, what could this technology realistically change about the way we approach health and longevity over the next decade? That would probably be-
Well-
You'll have to,
do- Yeah ...
maybe a
paragraph. I, I have, I have the answer in my head.
He
has it right
here. But I'll give you a teaser if it's okay. Good.
Yep.
I think you, you had talked at the outset, we were gonna call this podcast something about the future of, something, the future of cellular signaling for cellular health. It's not the future, it's the present. It, it might be your future if you haven't learned about it yet, so make it your present, read the newsletter, I'll have a great answer for you.
I want to spur more questions. Send those questions in to Autumn. Autumn's not looking to do more work, but we're gonna, we're gonna call upon her. I'll
forward them.
I promise she will forward them to me, I will get them back to her, and she can post them on wherever you get your information from Autumn.
And if you want to reach out to him directly, where do they find you? Your website, your social media. Right. Tell us about it.
Yeah, so our... Thank you for that. Our practice is called recellate.com because we are celebrating the renewal of your cells, and that could be w- health, wellness, optimization, longevity, avoiding a knee surgery, all those things.
So that's R-E-C-E-L-L-E-B-R-A-T-E. And because we made up the word, we cornered the internet on the word. So if you go to recellate.com, that's our website. If you go to @recellabrate on most of your social channels, you'll find us. Please follow us. And we put out educational content. We mean to educate.
Sometimes we put out something funny. Everyone needs a laugh. So check us out, reach out to us, a- at any time if you have questions, anything about regenerative medicine, stem cells, exosomes, plant-derived exosomes, ME cells, all kinds of options and alternatives that, that may be different from what your regular doctor may have offered you, and things I was offering people under limitations prior to me actually putting down the Kool-Aid and, and offering this now.
And it sounds like you also, depending on the platform, will come and speak.
I do like to speak 'cause it's the great way to educate people as to the options they're not hearing about. So yes, if you're inviting me to speak, I love to come visit Maryland and have some blue crab there. Anytime. Old Bay seasoning doesn't, doesn't, show up on every store shelf, so I have to come back to Maryland periodically.
I just meant in general, not for me. But- Oh, okay. ... you're in Scottsdale right now to speak.
Yeah, yeah. In Scottsdale we're at an event, for practitioners i, in the health and wellness space, and, I speak at, if, ev- if you h- if you're very interested and you're a listener, you'll find us usually in Austin in May at the Biohacking Conference, the BEYOND conference, Dave Asprey's conference.
You'll find us, at other health and wellness events, around the country, internationally. but, I, I also have to spend time in the clinic treating people, so we, we try to balance it.
And you're based out of Los Angeles you said?
Las Vegas. Sorry ... I'm a California refugee, one of many, and, we are now, and for the last, since 2011, had a presence in Henderson, Nevada, which is a suburb of Las Vegas.
Yep. I have several friends who have moved there, so perfect.
Yeah.
Thank you so much- Yeah ... for your time, and for- Thank you ... sharing this, and we look forward to hearing more from you in the newsletter.
I would love that. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much for joining our discussion. If you enjoyed this, please like, subscribe, most of all, share the love with others. Please share this episode so that we can help other people really recalibrate every aspect of their lives so they can be the best version of themselves, and I will see you in the next episode.
I want to have my quick disclaimer here that this is not a one-size-fits-all. If you want one-on-one coaching, let's talk, and we will make sure what wellness means to you is really put into your life, put into practice. I am using my undergrad in applied health and my life coaching experience to bring this podcast to you
